2000 ford focus ignition problem?
Question by boltbang:
I have a 2000 ford focus with a manual transmision. Over the past couple of weeks it has had an ignition problem common with this model. I have had to tap on the key pretty hard to get it to turn. I had a new key made thinking it was just the key. the new key also did not turn, so i tapped it and it turned but didn’t turn over. So i used my old key. I was going to make it in to the shop in the next couple of days. Today i tried to tap my key in and it was hard to do, it started and then later on i tried again and could not get it started. The key is turning and lights are coming on but the car is not attempting to turn over. While trying to hammer on the key so i could take it somewhere, the key broke off inside. Now i have no key, and can not get it to start. It will still turn and the lights come on but it will not fire up. Can i call a mobile locksmith to get this fixed or do i take it to a mechanic? Also can i pop the clutch to get it to the mechanic on this year of focus?

You can pop the clutch on any stickshift car. Just get it going pretty good and put it in first and pop the clutch. Make sure obviously that the key is turned to the on position. I would try needle nosed pliers to get the rest of the key out. Either that or something really thin that you can get on the sides of the key to wedge it out. Depends on how far in the key is. I don’t know what you mean exactly when you say you had to tap the key. But you might just need a new ignition lock you can get this at any junkyard, but then your igntion key won’t match your doors and glovebox. A locksmith should be able to get the key out, but they may not be able to fix the problem because you don’t know exactly what it is. I would go to a focus forum and ask around, forums for cars usually have answers to common annoying problems like this.
You ruined the lock cylinder–largely plastic and not meant to be pounded on for very long–the whole cylinder has various wires that make contact when turned with your key–you screwed it up so bad the wires are not aligned anymore–NEW CYLINDER time–which means you get new keys. The steering wheel lock is probably locked–popping the clutch won’t work and the car cannot be steered. Tow it to a dealer–NOT A LOCKSMITH–Ford has to do some tricky stuff–includes resetting the computer.–a greasy lock monkey cannot do it. Save that money, at least. Good luck–happy new keys
The first thing you need to do is change out the ingition switch so you can get the car to start. Yes you can push your car to get it started by popping the clutch just have the ingition switch on.
?All these new computer cars have such problems-get it fixed and trade it for a 84′-89′ mustang and get serious.
As I posted in another post you had… It won’t start due to loss of the PATS signal and popping the clutch or running it off a cliff won’t get it started unless the PCM recognizes a key programmed to it. (missing the big plastic half from the key area will cause it not to start)
You basically broke the key in the lock and the lock is not plastic but light medal and springs actually.. It will take lock cylinder removal and replacement… the locksmith can cut it out, but you’ll possibly have seperate keys for ignition and doors (IF that key you broke was your only 1 key is worse than that).. plus if he isn’t able to program a new key for you with a special programmer he is basically out of luck…
Bring it to the dealer with a tow truck and have them cut out the old cylinder, build a new one (there is a Ford TSB to replace with a new redesigned lock cylinder that is better at preventing this binding issue) to the key code that Ford has stored on corporate servers (under tight security but usually 5 people in any Ford dealer has access to this info).. and cut new keys and program it up..
recommend a dealer as too deep a cut can cost more with a new steering column
plus without experience, training, and the right tools, PATS can be fustrating and hitting on the locks could have cuased more damaged than you thing to the PATS receiver and such.
