A question about amateur locksmithing?
Question by Rover:
I have long been interested in locking mechanisms and am saving up for my first set of lock-picks and a couple of basic locks to experiment with.
I have long been interested in locking mechanisms and am saving up for my first set of lock-picks and a couple of basic locks to experiment with.
What sort of time limit should I set myself for picking a basic lock, after a couple of practice runs? What sort of picks and locks are best for the total beginner?
As an aside, how long would it take a professional locksmith to pick a domestic house lock, for example- seconds or hours?
Please only answer if you have knowledge of locksmithing. Thanks!

You can make the picks from those steel wires that you find in street sweeper brushes (the big round ones). its worth it to make your own picks once youve sussed the basics of picking methodology. I downloaded heaps of lock picking stuff from the net and from Limewire it is interesting, but as yet Ive still got to find the time to make my picks.
I do have background on this. First, be careful where you ‘practice’. In many states picks and locksmith tools are illegal to possess and can be considered burglary tools.
I professional can open most home locks in seconds or a minute or two.
It should only take seconds to open a domestic house lock, All you need is a rack and a pick. Very simple items that are very cheap. Most locksmith spend most of there time opening cars and rekeying house hold locks.
Growing up in a family business I spent everyday at the shop working from the age of 11 thru 21 I thought it was fun as a kid but glad I don’t have to be there doing it everyday any more
