“Breaking” into my own house?
Question by duckygrl21:
The house we bought had old, crappy locks. It was on our list of things to do. Never got around to it. Well, the lock finally broke on the front door, none of the keys will unlock it. So, I left it unlocked as I left for work this morning. Hubby, came back home behind me and locked the door….great. I was able to unlock the bottom lock on one of the doors but the deadbolt is locked (we never had this key, don’t use this door, which is why its locked). I called all around town looking for a locksmith and apparently there is a locksmith convention which they are all attending. Does anyone know how I could get into my home without breaking windows? We have a good sized storm moving in and would like to avoid having a broken window right now. Thanks in advance.
Thank you all so much for your help (except Ryan T., thanks, I’m not an idiot. His key did not work either, but I already stated that I tried all the keys). I’m off to try a few things.

look for an unlocked window and crawl in, if the windows are unlocked but have the stoppers on, get a stick to push them in. Kick the door in, its free until you have to buy a new frame, and door. smash the deadbolt with a slege hammer
Well, I’d try calling our husband. His key must work since he was able to lock the door with with the “faulty” lock.
See if you have a flat bladed screw driver in the garage or car or a flat bladed pry bar called a wonder bar, or a flat bladed putty knife works well too. See if you left a window unlocked and pry from the bottom in the middle of the sash or alternately on each side. Hope you are not wearing a short skirt when you climb though the window.
Also make sure you have ID so that when the neighbors call the police for a B&E you can show that it really is your home.
If you have to break a window do it on the side away from the prevailing winds. Normally the southeast corner is the sheltered side.
if hubby has no key take a jig saw and saw around the dead bolt then knock it out
so your just sitting in front of computer hoping some stranger with insight as to the layout of you home can up with a solution to an unseen problem. theres a rock in the garden the froth one over under it dig. Dig a vertical shaft 4′ X 4′ to a depth of 20′. Then dig a horizontal tunnel north by northwest for 42′. tunnel straight up and break through and there you are. Well Best of luck.
since its a deadbolt they lock into place unlike the knob lock which can be carded in the only way short of having it picked is to get a drill and drill to the left and the right of where the key goes in ( go dead middle of where the key hole is and go middle between it and the edge of the lock and drill the hole on both sides this will drill out the screws which is holding the lock on then once its off you will see a backset with either a + looking hole or a D shaped hole either way stick a flat head screw driver in it and turn right and your inside your house GL !
I assume your in now, but if the door is still locked, try tappng the pins out of the hinges and pull the door out of the striker plate when you pull the hinge side open. once the door is off, remove the deadlock.
