can a locksmith duplicate my bmw master key?
ab asked:
Lost the key to my bmw M3 and 200$ to replace. Why not take this key to the locksmith and have 2 spare keys made for 2$ prior to losing the key. Can a locksmith cut a bmw key and if not why not?

No because almost all newer cars (definitely BMW) have a theft deterent chip built into the key that corresponds with the cars computer, if it does not get the signal from the key it will not start. You must get it from the dealer, no where else. Good luck!
The reason it might have cost so much is because the BMW’s might have a computer chip in it. If that is the case only the dealership can make you one because they would have to hook up you car to a system to make sure they have the correct chip in the key so when you put your key in the ignitions it wont lock up your car.
Ask you dealership exactly why??
you will have to get it from the dealership. BMW’s, especially the M series, are extremely theft deterrent. so the key would probably not work.
no there is a chip in the master key that allows you to turn the car on
not only the chip in the key but the cut itself is insanely hard to duplicate. Bimmer owners know our keys are cut left and right top and bottom with a center divider. not at all duplicable with a key machine
