Can a locksmith make a key from a padlock?

Question by Silverears:

I have a nice padlock I’d like to keep using, but I’ve lost the key. Are locksmiths able to make a key just by having the lock? The lock is open, if that helps.

Probably, if there is a number on the back of the lock. They theoretically could look up the code and make a key from that.

Probably cheaper to buy a new lock.

I don’t think so, they could pick it, but I don’t think a key could be made. I would keep looking for the key, but if you need it off you should just cut it.

A good locksmith can make a key for any lock. They use a colored dye that shows where the tumblers hit. They file that off, and retry. if the dye shows the locksmith will file more until, finally-a key.

I have had locksmiths make keys for my house and my car door locks (I have a bad habit of losing keys ) I don’t see why they would not be able to make a key for a padlock.

costly, but can be done.

Sure, that should not be a problem for a locksmith. Sometimes there is a code stamped into the lock, some times it has to be done by impressioning, but it can be done. The only consideration is that if it is an inexpensive padlock, it may be more cost effective to just buy another.
