Can a locksmith open my home for my x-husband?
September asked:
My x-husband wants my TV that I paid for and I’m afraid that he will call a locksmith one of these days to come into my home. Would a locksmith open my house if my x said that he lives their but has lost his key? My x does not have my address on his driver’s licenses. What are the laws when it comes to locksmiths opening doors in California?

Get an alarm system
He may be a smooth enough talker to get some idiot locksmith to do it, but if he does, they will both have much bigger problems with criminal charges.
I would install an alarm system, and/or an extra deadbolt (or two) to make it more difficult, make some distinctive scratches somewhere on the bottom of the tv (maybe your initials or something) for use by the police if required, and invest in a small hidden camera for the front door and the room the tv is in.
It may be overkill, but that’s just me. If I really felt he might do it, I would make damn sure he got busted for it.
No, a reputable locksmith will not open it with out proof of residency. If he finds one that he can bribe to do it, it’s called breaking and entering, it’s against the law. Both he and the locksmith can be arrested. If he does go in to your house, call the police right away.
If there is a landlord please tell him to keep an eye out and explain the circumstances . If it’s a single house put a note on your doors that says . Keep OUT , no trespassing .
Nobody has the right to enter . It is called Breaking and entering and a crime . If that ever happens, have him arrested . In fact if it were me , I would write him a letter and tell him. You break into my flat, you go to jail.
Case closed .
call the local police and locksmiths and give them a head’s up
I had absolutely no problem having a locksmith open my boyfriend’s apt door for me. His address was NOT on my license but he didn’t even question it. As long as you pay they’ll open the door. I am also in California.
Thats burglary, you can sue your ex husband for force entry, thats againts the law either he open it or the locksmith blotter him to police.
