can I change a deadbolt lock without buying a whole new one?
jpspiderman2003 asked:
Deadbeat roomate. I need to change the locks. But the thing is my apartment building is very old. And the door lock is a Surface Mount Deadbolt. I looked on lowes.com///homedepot.com etc etc etc. And I cant seem to find the kind of deadbolt I need. So I need to know if there is someway I can change the “guts” of the lock only. My friends father is a locksmith so I am sure I could egt cut a deal. But I would prefer to do it myself.

More questions & answers:
- What level of difficulty am I facing. replacing the deadbolt lock myself?
- Is a locksmith necessary for a new home lock change?
- Medeco deadbolt lock – is loose – what tool can tighten it ?
- How can I add a lock to a file cabinet drawer (without hiring a locksmith)?
- We have a Schlage deadbolt that is “balky”. Removal, cleaning, silicone have not worked. How to free up?

Have your friends father re-key the lock. Just take it to him and he should be able to do it for about $15
Good luck

Yep, what moskie said. ANY locksmith should be able to re-key the lock for you. If you take the lock to the locksmith it will be much cheaper than if you ask the locksmith to come to the lock but either way will probably be cheaper than replacing the whole lock set, even if you are able to do it yourself.
Now, if you want a REALLY cheap DIY solution, put a hasp and padlock on the outside of the door for when you are gone and a heavy duty chain lock on the inside for when you are home.

Change the cylinder.
Go to It’s a restoration supply. If the lock is very old, a locksmith might not be able to re key it. It is probably a Mortise Lock.
