Make copies of the key and get them to the landlors right away. Explain what happened, and once you give them a copy of the key, you should be fine. Things happen, and you had to take care of the problem yourself, most likley they will understand, and having a new key means that they still have the access if they need it. Good Luck!

Your landlord would have to be pretty unreasonable to not have an understanding of the situation. But on a side note …
If the locksmith could not unlock a simple house lock then either he needs to get a new job or more likely he just wanted to charge you for new locks. So be weary of bad businessmen.

You should not be in trouble with the landlord if you provide a copy of the key and an explanation of your situation to your landlord.
