Chrysler 2001 PT crusier stalls repeatedly when starting but will run if you rev the engine?

Charles H asked:

I’ve taken the car to a mechanic and they say it’s a problem with the sentry transponder key. A while back I lost the key and a locksmith made a new key for the car. They say that the sentry system is shutting off the fuel pump intermittantly and this is what causes the car to stall. This doesn’t make sense to me however because the engine doesn’t run at all when this happens. It stalls immediately unless you give it gas and keep the rpm’s up at which point it will run fine after about 15min the car seems to “warm up” and will no longer stall when letting off the gas. Also I thought if it was the key the car would run for five seconds before timing out. That’s what it did when the locksmith came and inserted the key before programming it. To further complicate things it seems to happen whenever I get gas and originally it was thought that this was some sort of vaccum leak problem. But now the machenic swears it is the key, does this make sense to anyone? any other ideas?

Oxygen sensor maybe?

The transponder key will shut it off immediately if it was the problem. You wouldn’t be able to keep it running by giving it gas, it would cut fuel and spark to the engine. I’m 99% sure it isn’t the key (there’s always room for odd things that you just never thought of or thought would happen).

Since it keeps running once warm, it sounds more like a sensor or other electronic control problem that’s keeping it running rough until it reaches normal operating temp. Only way to find it is to see what is going on with the sensors when the vehicle is doing this, which requires a good diagnostic scanner instead of just a code reader.

Also, it could be a fuel problem, where it isn’t getting enough fuel pressure until it warms up, or has an evaporative emissions leak in the fuel system.

In short, find another mechanic. Best thing to do is to have a dealer look at it (hopefully this isn’t the dealer mechanic) since they deal with them all day long and know the vehicles better than any independent repair shop mechanic ever will.

Have your PT PCM´s check for DTC´s. That will tell you what your problem is. I recommend to go to any Chrysler dealer to perform the scan…

Could be plugged fuel filter

Somethings not right. If you are using a key you had made and you can start the car and keep it running. than the car doesn’t have theft proof system on it. This system will not even let the car start much less run. I think you have another problem and it sounds like the AIS motor. That’s the automatic idle speed motor. If it’s slow responding or not working at all, ESPECIALLY in cold weather, the car will be hard to keep running after starting. The sentry key system you refer to, if it had one, would let the engine start but immediately die on 3 tries and then go into a no start program for 30 minutes before any key could start it. Even the right key wouldn’t work until 30 minutes were up.
