Does a 1999 Dodge Ram 1500 need a transponder (chip) key?

Vick (In Da Clink) asked:

I bought this truck at an auction, drove it for a while and then the battery died. After I charged and reconnected the battery, an after-market alarm that was installed went off and I could not get it to stop. I tried disconnecting it, but it would not start still. A friend of mine came over and told me it needs a chip key (the locksmith who made the keys for me said it did not). I just need to know where to go from here. Thanks.

if it has a chip key, it will start and die 3 times, and then not start at all.if you take your vin # to any dealer they can run it and tell you exactly every option on your truck. theres no way to tell without the vin unless you take the steering column apart and you know what to look for.

It should not need a chip key. I don’t think Dodge trucks used chip keys until around 2002. A non-chip key has a black head on the key while a chip key is gray. That’s how you can tell the difference.

nope they dont
i have a 2001 and it doesn’t use a key with the chip.
