Has anyone else allowed a child to play in the drivers seat of a recently restored car?

The lock pickers bible!

Question by fstopf4:

Last month I had to get a couple of keys cut for a recently restored Triumph Spitfire.I have a little over 2000 hours in personal labor on this project and I can't even guess how much money.
I went to a local locksmith and while I was waiting a little guy ( I' m guessing 6 or 7 years old) who wad absollutely bald (later learned a leukemia patient) kept asking his mother if they could buy him a car like mine. He went out through the door and his mother was screaming not to get close to the car. At this point I went outside and opened the car door and invited him inside the car. He played inside for the half hour that the locksmith worked on keys, When I was ready to leave he begged me for a ride. I jad to decline since his parents did not know me and I thought they might become a little concerned about a road trip. He begged his parents to watch me pull away a request which was granted.
The parents have asked me to give him a B'day ride. should I?

Of course you should. If you don't, every time you look at that car you will be reminded of your lack of generosity. But take precautions. Kids are kids. Make sure his hands are clean, make sure he knows he has to be careful with it. Put the top down and drive him around the block. I spent many happy years driving a Spitfire….enjoy it and enjoy sharing it.

If you have insurance and seat belts in the car and you're not too concerned about liability, then go ahead. Personally, I wouldn't. You don't even know the people and if someone hit your car while giving him a ride and he were injured, you'd never forgive yourself.
