If your mom lives near you and you trust her not to go through your stuff, then sure it’s a good idea.
Locksmiths – it just depends how many calls they have before your home, and which ones are emergencies.
It’s a good idea to give someone a spare key to your place if for no other reason than to avoid the expense of a locksmith if you lose/forget yours.
I’m part of a 3-way key circle. Say I’m friend A. Friend B has my key, Friend C has B’s Key, and I have C’s key. This system was devised during an evening of heavy drinking after B locked himself out of his place and ended up breaking in. It made sense at the time.
There’s no telling how long a locksmith will take to get in. Picking a lock in real life is nothing like the way they do it on TV. The locksmith may get lucky and open the front door in thirty seconds or he may try and try on the front door, the side door, and the back door and finally give up and decide to drill out a lock. Give Mom a key.
