Contact ALOA (Associated Locksmiths of America)
They are the closest thing as to a Locksmith union, and can arrange training seminars such as “Beginner’s Locksmith”, as well as many other classes and events tailored to locksmith trainees as well as the seasoned professional.
The skills that any locksmith must possess to be proficient in his or her career is as following:
Basic math skills
Being able to read and write very well
Being able to have good eyesight (with glasses, as needed) to be able to read “E – Pluribus Unum” on the face of a penny with out strain.
Understanding maps and or directions
Enjoying long work hours with not enough pay : )
Being VERY adapt in the use of hand and or power tools.
You must possess a driver’s license.
You must be good with customers.
You must be as honest as the most honorable priest is.
You MUST have a sense of humor to work in a security field.
Your criminal history must not include anything more felonious than parking or jay-walking violations : )
You must be altruistic in your attempts at security related endevors, or else don’t even think about being a Locksmith.
If you want to become a locksmith for the “fast cars”, loose women”, “easy money”, or for the “James Bond style tools”,
FORGET IT!!!
I am taking the pleasure to be the one who bursts your bubble in the fact that there are NO magic keys or tools that open all kinds of locks & cars, It makes for good TV, but it isn’t real.
Remember, “Your mind is a terrible thing to waste”.
PS. As far as the “apprenticing” goes, be forewarned, old-timers are leery as to take on new blood.
Contact ALOA if you are REALLY interested, but don’t waste your time or theirs if you aren’t serious about a career.
GOOD LUCK!
I have never heard of a trade school for locksmithing. I’m not saying they don’t exist. The more common way to learn the trade is by working as an apprentice for another locksmith.
Keep picking away at it. The key will be found and the lock will open.
Answerer 1 has the right answer. They have apprentice programs.
