If you lost your keys, how can you take it to the dealer… if you have a spare key, take it to the dealer or wal-mart and have an extra copy made, this would be cheaper then having it re-keyed. If not, then yes call a locksmith, thats their job. Good Luck

Call your local dealership. They will know what to do.

Depending on the make.model of your car, you can probably just call the dealer. That would be the best (even if it’s more expensive) option because the dealer will have the parts and the model specific lock for your car. Sorry you lost your keys :(

If your key has a chip in it, you will need to have your towed to a dealership to have them program another key. Those keys are very expensive. You are looking at around $300.00 for the tow, reprogramming, and new keys. Crazy, huh?

If your car is equipped with a security system of any kind, call the dealer. But if your key is just a good ol’ key as commonly found on mid-80s cars, the locksmith will do.

go to a locksmith and ask him to make a new set of keys unless your old keys had a security chip, then you HAVE to go to the dealer. A locksmith will only take about an hour and he can change your locks so the old keys won’t work anymore. I think the dealer could too; but the dealer usually has to order parts that takes a day to a week.

i own a repair shop, and that would be the best thing to do,they can re-key it in a little while ,and the cost is much less than going to a dealer also, and a lot faster too,but i have had it done a few times m self, and they do a real good job at it,,good luck with it,i hope this help,s.,,have a good x-mas.

If its a Mercedes Benz all you have to do is call the dealer with your VIN # and they will make you a new one.

lucylue52005 @ 1:34 pm

yu can call the dealer ship and give them the vin number and they can make you a new key and it would be alot less then having it rekeyed or having it towed to the shop most shops will call and have the dealership remake a key

paintmetalwood @ 9:06 pm

all the above answers are wrong. any good locksmith shop can obtain your original key profile from your vin number. take your registration that has your name and vin number to the locksmith office to save the service call fees. you will need the registration and an ID that matches the name on the registration before they will make a key and give it to you. should be about 25 dollars if they dont have to program an electronic key. you dont need to get your car re keyed as that means to take all the locks out and change the key profiles and the pins in the tumblers of the lock cylinders.

If you just need a new key, go to the dealership that handles your make/model and give them the VIN number, you may need to show proof of ownership. But if you’re afraid that someone may come back w/ the key and steal your car, rekey is best or add a club lock to your car. If you need it rekeyed after getting a key to start the car, you’ll need to go to the dealership.
