Is it a job for a locksmith?

Question by m_moran07:

My ignition is stuck in the “lock” position. I have a feeling the key cylinder is bad. I could replace the key cylinder if I could get the key to accessory, because then I could just push the pin and pull. But because the key is stuck in ‘lock’, it’s not that simple. I’m out of ideas of how to fix this myself. Can a locksmith do this, or should I tow it to the Toyota dealership? It’s a 92 toyota corolla sedan, 5spd. If you have any other ideas, feel free to contribute.
I’ve tried turning it and all that jazz.. not mechanically stupid at least… It has been rather cold of late and the car has over 300 thousand miles — so who knows how many times it has been started? I think the problem is in the key cylinder. Can I get this off without putting the key in the accessory position?

have you tried turning the wheel extremely hard one way or the other while trying to unlock? sometimes the imports will do this. Otherwise i would have an onsite locksmith co do it right there.Had this done once for 100.00 onsite . probably cheaper than a 60.00 tow and dealer fees

No its not a job for a locksmith.
It’s a mechanical issue, they will need to pull your dashboard and steering column out, and go from there.

Yeah, I know that sometimes if the wheel is turned one way too far, the key won’t turn. Try turning the wheel some, and then turn the key. Hopefully it’s a simple fix like that.

if you’re mechanically inclined yes you could remove the assembly(its bolted together by anti theft bolts) and take it to a locksmith,or a mobile locksmith could repair it.one of the cylinders is probably damaged or stuck and that tends to happen from excessive weight on you key chain(trinkets,etc.etc). cost you around 90.00 to 125.00.

I am guessing that the steering wheel isn’t in the straight ahead position. While having pressure on the key to try to turn it towards the “on” position shake the steering wheel to the left and right rather quickly. Not too severly but each way till it won’t move any further. Because there is a pin that enters the steering column to lock it this sometimes allows the shaking movement to jar it enough to allow it to free itself
