Just locked keys in the car and my dog is inside?

Question by SE:

A locksmith should be here in about an hour. Is there enough air in the car for my dog to be ok until the locksmith gets here? It’s a little after midnight, and the temperature is about 65 degrees. I don’t want to break a window unless I absolutely have to – but if I have to, I’ll do it.

Trust your instincts — break the window and rescue your dog! A life is more precious than money, even if it’ll cost you a lot of money to repair the broken window.

Depends on the time and the temperature. If it is above 70 degrees outside and there is sunshine on the car, there is NO WAY I would risk it. Oxegyn isn’t the issue. Heat stroke is.

An hour should be ok. I close windows with my dogs inside in the winter when I go into the store and at events to keep them warm. So don’t panic, just keep an eye on the dog. If dog appears distressed then deal with window, but really should be fine IMHO.

And make a spare and either give it to a friend or hide it on the car or somewhere you can get it. I’ve locked myself out of cars and my new condo a few times now. But no longer a problem, hid a housekey and can get to my spare car key.

Are you serious you dog is not going to run out of air. Your dog would only be in trouble if it is a summer’s day outside.

he should be okay don’t worry

lol…the dog will be fine. you wouldn’t die if you sat in your car for an hr waiting for someone at a store or something would you??? if it were daytime and HOT then yeah…that would be an emergency situation

just wait till the locksmith gets there…and do like me….have several copies of that key made lol

If the sun is down, your dog is in no immediate danger. Sunlight makes a car into an oven very quickly, it’s called the greenhouse effect. But if the sun is not shining, then the car will not get any warmer than the outside air. And cars are not sealed airtight, he will not suffocate.

watch for any signs of collapse or weakness.these can be the signs of a heatstroke.she will have enough air, you should be worried about her developing heatstroke…if she vomits, acts disoriented, or seems to be acting strange at all, get her to a vet immediately!!most places have an emergency number on their answering machine..good luck!!

At midnight it may be ok as the temperature will only drop at this time of night and the sun is not out to intensify the temperature inside the car.

Stay by the dog and the car and watch the dog. If it shows signs of physical distress, you should break the window, but I don’t think it will be necessary.

stay near your car, make sure you keep your dog company while you wait for the locksmith. keep your cellphone handy and check if the locksmith is on his way. check your dog, make sure he’s not acting lethargic or peculiar, if he starts acting differently and the locksmith is still not there, you might have to break into your car.

good luck! hope your dog gets out fine :)

Your dog will be fine. I have done this before and actually stayed at the window and talked to my dog who had his paws on my door armrest and eventually hit the unlock button before anyone could even get there! When I realized he was getting close to the unlock button I was moving further up to the front of my car to get him to follow me and he hit it. I looked like a real idiot trying to talk to him like that but I didn’t care it worked. Give it a try it may work for you. If not, don’t worry. With the temp not being high and the sun being down the dog will be just fine. Good Luck!!

Yeah there is enough air in the car. Your dog will be ok. I’ve heard about people sleeping in there car over night with all the windows up. So nothing to worry about. Good luck.

Hannah R @ 11:18 pm

You shoudl be fine. You only have to be worried if your dog is in direct heat and it’s reallly hot if not it should be fine! Don’t Worry!

i did the same thing last summerwith three dogs in the car and was told by the rspca that so long as they were not distressed in any way that they would be ok as it was they were under a tree at the time so they were in shade in actual fact so long as they could see me they were fine they actually were more distressed at the fact that the man from the breakdown service was trying to break in to there car just keep a very close eye on the dog and make sure shes not getting distressed and she should be fine
