Locking issue with car – who do i take it to?

ants79 asked:

Got a problem with the passenger door on our Mazda 323, it won’t unlock, the button inside the door won’t go up or down, all the other doors work fine, but can’t unlock the passenger door from inside or outside.

I’m assuming some part of the locking mechanism has broken inside the door.

What i would like to know is who do i take it to? An auto electrician, a locksmith, or just a general mechanic?

Thanks.

Take the door panel off on the inside and see what maybe broke. You could just take it to your local mechanic and have them fix it.

General mechanic can do this. The lock rod has probably come off. There is a plastic end that can become brittle and break off and this allows the rod to slip out of place.

Since you can not move it from the inside, or with the key in the lock from the outside, it sounds like a mechanical problem in the door which a general mechanic at your local shop could fix. There are linkages in the door, which are probably jammed or broken and not an issue with the key/lock mechanism which a locksmith would need to address. Also wouldn’t need the help of automotive electrician, since it is more than just the power lock switch thats not working.

Make sure the inside and outside door handles are fully pushed back in, or down. If one is partially stuck in pulled position the door lock will not be movable. Other than that, pull the door panel and start looking for the catch to open the door, then go from there. This isn’t too big a deal. An auto tech is who to take it to if all else fails.
