Safety pins are mostly too short and paperclips often too soft. What you need to pick a lock is one tool to jam the cylinder sideways and another to rake the pins. The first is normally 1/8″ wide and has a twisted L with a 4″ leg and a 1″ leg. The short leg is inserted in the lock and the long one used to provide different degrees of pressure. The rake is used to bounce or push the pins while the gentle pressure catches the crack between the top and bottom pins.
It takes practice and touch and skill. When I worked in a hardware store, another guy and I took a repinning class that included picking (as when we didn’t have a key). There were times when he could pick a lock in a few seconds and I would struggle with it for several minutes and then we would take another lock and be the reverse. Cheap loose locks are easier to pick than tight precision locks.
