lost key for an old car?
girlygirl86 asked:
so my sister lost her key to her car and it was her only key. her car is an 87 i believe but i heard that cars didnt start having codes and vin numbers in the early 90’s. is that true? and i was wondering how much it would cost or an estimate for a locksmith to make a new key or what exactly they would have to do!? anyone with some knowledge would be helpful.
sorry i meant to say i heard that cars didnt have vin numbers and codes UNTIL the early 90’s. oops!

I’d get the yellow pages, get on the phone with a few locksmiths and get estimates. I would say between 100-150 for them to come out and make you a new key.
Best would be to call a couple of locksmiths for an estimate. Yes the car has a VIN number in same place as the newer ones.
Sometimes a locksmith is not good enough my sister used one and the car would not work with the key. Usually you have to go to the specific car dealer these keys cost about 125 but they will work
Cars have had VIN numbers for a long time ! The lock will probably have to be changed. Next time make 2 or 3 copies and keep one in a safe place at home.
Some early cars still had the key No. on the door lock barrel
you just have to take off the drivers door panel and look on the lock Assembly/door lock barrel and hopfully see the No.
hope you are lucky.
Go to a dealership that sells that model car. Take your ownership with you and they can cut a new key based on the VIN. They could do that with 1976 Chevys.
