I thought I would post this. I locked my keys in my truck. I had a friend try to unlock my door with a coat hanger. Did not work. I called a locksmith that was .10 miles away from me…..right accros the street from me….literally!! . $89 friggin dollars they said to walk across the street and open my door with their slim jim, that takes about 5 minutes!! So I called the dodge dealership near me (I have a Dodge Ram 1500) and asked them if they could possibly make me a duplicate key for my truck. They told me that all the proof I needed was a valid drivers liscense, and a valid paper that has your VIN#, your name, and your vehicle description on it. I gave them that and I had 2 new brand new truck keys given to me for….ta-daaa….$4.00!!!. Just a good tip for all.

this will only work for certain years and certain vehicles. If you don’t know whather your Ignition has ever been swapped or re-keyed you may be disappointed to get the wrong keys. A professional Locksmith will make sure all is properly working before charging you.
Good tip. Most newer (i.e. ’90s and newer) vehicles are in the dealership database. Older ones are not so consistent. The only problem with this approach is that many people keep their insurance and registration papers in the vehicle, so you have to get in first to get the documentation before they will cut a key for you. You could always keep a copy in the house, or better yet, keep a spare key in the house.
Locks smiths are wonderful. IF you need a key made. To open a car door, call a towing service. And please, unless you are driving a pre 1980 vehicle, do NOT let anyone within 100 feet of your vehicle with a slim jim in their hand. There are too many things inside the cavity subject to damage fishing with a slim jim.
