My dad pulled an old honda twinstar out of the shed. it has no key and a dead battery, how can i start it?

Johnny Appleseed asked:

its been in the shed for a couple years, it has an electric and a kickstart as well.

my dad said it ran when they put it away.

i put gas in the tank and it came out a hole on the bottom (it was a designed hole, it had threads and stuff) and there was a hose leading from the carb close to the hole, but it just couldnt quite reach, should it plug right in to the hole?

other than that it has no key, and we cant find one that fits. so what can i do besides take it apart and bring it to a locksmith?

and the battery is dead as well. does it need to have a charge? or can i just "bump start" it?

More questions & answers:

  1. Is it possible and legal to buy a bump key in the UK?
  2. I can't open any doors to a 2000 YukonXL, battery dead, key won't open any doors – help please?

You can put a screw driver or small key in the ignition and wiggle it. it should turn on pretty easy they were built cheap. You sound like the gas line needs to be replaced. Do this. If this has set for a long time, it probably has varnish in the carbs. They should be cleaned. but to just try and get it running hook the gas line up , jump the battery with a car and kick and kick and kick somemore.

sounds like the petcock is missing, pick up a new/used one and screw it into the hole, hook up the fuel line to it ,pour in fresh gas with a bit of carb cleaner added,THEN hook it up to a good battery,if jumping from a car,DON'T have the car running while boosting

sounds like your missing the petcock from the tank.

you can't bumpstart a a bike without a battery in my experience. you need that little bit of initial charge to do it. the ignition also needs to be 'on' to bumpstart.

sounds like you may have a good project bike don't try to cut corners on fixing it up, it'll take some time and patience to get it running again.

yes, get a longer piece of fuel line and hook it up. the ignition switch should have at least one black and one red wire coming from it, you can disconnect one of these wires (black or red) dont matter which, and it should work. if it has a headlight the wires are probably in the headlight bucket. more than likely you dont need the battery to get it running on that bike. good luck.

Your missing a petcock for the hole, you need to probably have the carburetor cleaned, Fresh gas, new battery. and if you don't want to take it to a locksmith, just hotwire a new switch

Since the petcock is missing, check it out real good and make sure the rest of it is still there before going any further.

Copy the number from the lock cylinder and try a dealer before a locksmith. You never know what those guys can do until you ask.

You need a petcock (fuel valve). You also should put Seafoam in the gas and change the oil before trying to start the bike.
