What John H said will work if you just have a centre lock on the door, if you need to first lift the handle to engage camber's or claws top and bottom as well its a lot harder to get enough pressure to snap it with mole grips. In this case you need someone to hold the lock with mole grips from one side and tap the top of the lock with a hammer from the other side

Using a 10mm hss drill carefully drill in the round section that the key turns in, until you reach the centre.
This in turn removes all of the key pins and enables the locking cam to be accessed and turned with a screw driver.
A locksmith will probably charge in excess of £60 to do this and then another £30-£40 for a new lock.
Your local supplier will sell you a new lock for about £6.

First try pushing in the door before turning the handle. The bolt could be catching on the striker plate hole. So there may not be anything wrong with the lock. Your door or house could have shifted this winter causing this. If this is the case cut the hole in the striker plate bigger. If this is not the case and if the lock needs to be replace go with what JOHN H said.

unscrew the door handle and take it off the lock.... get a pair of mold grips and using lever action turn away from door casing until lock snaps.....push through the lock....flick over the switch (in the hole you just created by pushing the lock out) hey presto put the handle back on and the door will open this will work on the oval and teardrop shape...Good luck
