my key wont go right into the lock on my front door and it’s locked?
Question by galaxy:
the key will only go three quatrters of the way in and obviously wont turn, how do I either open it or how much will it cost me for a locksmith to come and open it and replace the lock if it’s broken. It’s a upvc door with a standard lock.
I came in through the garage door, or I could have used the back door, we live in a house not a shed!
I just wondered approx costs for the locksmith that’s all.
Hey I’m blonde not stupid!
I think that one of the pins inside the lock may have bent out of alignment and that is why the key won’t go back in, I’ve tried the wd40 thing, thanks.

How the hell did you get in to ask this then ?
All you have to do is to call the locksmith, no matter how much it costs. You may pay him later.
Silly question, but its not deadlocked? And there isn’t another key in the other side? That is normally when our lock won’t open.
And for a new lock a couple of years ago it cost us £90 for the lock, and we had a family friend fit it. Sorry I can’t help you with how much a locksmith will charge.
The door or the frame may have swelled. Lean heavily on the door when you are trying to get the key working.
try spraying it with wd40 before paying for a locksmith
Try spraying a small amount of WD40 into the lock hole (thru the little red straw) and see if that helps otherwise it’s time for a new lock assembly.
it sounds like you have a anti tamper lock somebody as tried a different key or a lock pick the tumblers have dropped you now require a locksmith if this is the case.
or grab the door by the handle and pull it towards and then try the key it might be just misaligned
How did you get out of the house to begin with?
Of course a pin may be bent or rusted/stuck, but WD40 is NOT a good product to use in locks except emergencies. Since it is a petroleum-based product, it will evaporate leaving a sticky tar-like residue. Graphite also is not a good alternative as it will get moist and gooey and finally harden. Silicone sprays are the best choice.
When you say standard lock ,do you mean a euro cylinder? this is what’s normally fitted to upvc doors.
1. Have you tried the key in the other side of the lock?
probably have and i bet it will not turn.
2. I could explain how to DIY but better to leave it to the experts
3. Don’t need a locksmith (can be expensive) a good joiner or upvc window fitter should be able to do the work for less money. Cost to replace lock depends where you live.
Euro cylinders £10 -£15 + £50 labour.
We use a contract joiner for lock changes, he charges £45 for lock changes which includes the lock
My husband is a locksmith (among other things).
When this has happened to us, he explained it is often caused by bits of metal or dirt that get inside the lock.
You can test this on a lock that can be unlocked on the inside. If it unlocks easily inside, it may be a simple fix.
He also does not like WD40 for locks. (Practically everything else, but not locks.)
He showed me to take some olive oil (not veg soy or corn) and dip they key in it. Then, though it may be difficult at first, work the key in and out of the lock. You may have to wipe the key clean or re-coat with oil and it may take a few minutes, but this will lubricate the lock for quite some time.
Oh yeah, the reason for not using WD40 is that it is poisonous and smells bad and locks are something you have to touch everyday.
WD40… or if it has some frozen water in it… heat your key with a lighter.
Failing that… disassemble the lock from the inside and replace it. This is a lot cheaper than a lock smith.
I wouldnt use WD-40 its a water displasement formula but it tends to collect dirt and dust ect. They make a Grafite spray one brand is called lock ease and that is specifally for locks to lubricate them if its stuck ect .if you cannot try that because of the already sprayed WD -40 than just replace the lock from the inside unsrew the screws pull out the clyinder and take a screwdriver and twist the locking mechanism (where the rode slides through on the cylinder) then ones thats no longer in the lock position you should be able to remove it .
Is there a key in the other side?
The lock barrel probably has just gummed up. It’s unlikely that you have a bent pin.
Try spraying WD40 into the keyhole. This works in 99% of cases.
If that doesn;t work then a locksmith will cost you about £60 + the cost of a new barrel.
You can replace the barrel on a PVC door your self if you are confident enough. I’m assuming that you have the normal PVC door lock which is a Yale type key combined with lever handles.
Look at the edge of the door near where the lock’s tonge sticks out. You’ll see a single cross-head screw. This holds the barrel in place.
Make sure that all is in the unlocked position. Take off the handles and eustucian plate from the inside of the door. Remove (carefully) the screw I mentioned. Pull out the barrel.
Take your new barrel and replace by reversing the above procedure.
