What do you do when your car key breaks off in the ignition?

Question by marthat1219@sbcglobal.net:

Can you get the half of the key out without calling a locksmith? They quoted me 375$. Can I get a copy of the broken key some other way?
That was my only key. Do you know if they can make a copy from the broken one if I get the piece out? Thank you all for your really good advice.

More questions & answers:

  1. The key won’t turn the ignition of my car. Can anyone please help?
  2. Can a locksmith decode an electronic coded entrance?
  3. How do you get a key out that is stuck in the ignition?
  4. Why is my insurance company investigating my car theft?
  5. to copy CAR KEY, “Daewoo Lanos”?

curse?

You might try using a pair of needle-nosed pliers to see if you can get out the broken bit, or perhaps insert something like a paper clip into the lock to try and wiggle the piece out.

But you might also cause damage to the lock itself, which will mean more money. So it’s your choice, I’m afraid. Still, if you get the piece out I assume you do have a spare key somewhere?

That happened to one of my friends and she just left it in there and could start the car just by turning the ignition…

But it was an old Escort, and no-one would want to steal it…

punch yourself in the face!

You simply use a flat head screw driver to start the car until you can get the ignition fixed.

You might be able to get another key from the dealer, but that doesn’t help if you can’t remove the broken piece.

Ask your local gas station mechanic if he can remove it. 375 sounds high.

buy a set of clock plyers..or use a bobby pin

a dealer can extract it pretty quickly and if you do not have a spare, they can make one from the VIN in less than 5 minutes.

it might depend what kind of car it is cause some cars can still work but you should take the car to a auto repair shop

My key is broke in mine now i am so glad you asked this question. in the morning i am taking my car to this locksmith who is charging me 15 dollars to take mine out. Heck a hundred dollarsor more is way to much just to get a broken key out. So please if you don’t do it yourself get a locksmith from your hood.

This happened to me a long while back.
I removed the ignition barrel and took it to a locksmith.
They removed the old key and cut a new one for me using the barrel number printed on the side.
Not sure how easy or difficult removing the barrel would be on your car though.
Hope this may help and good luck.
ps. Do you have a breakdown service,? Im sure they have come across this problem before, and could be the cheapest method or at least get a second opinion from them, good luck again.

locksmiths have a special tool for this, and in most cases pulls out quick and easy, so call around until you find the $15 quote.
