Why is my insurance company investigating my car theft?
Question by Carmen C:
They claim that there is no evidence that the car was broken into, I went to see the car and the steering column was apart and I don’t understand why they’re having a forensic locksmith look at it. They took an hour long recorded statement from me like I am a criminal. I’ve cooperated and they even asked for a copy of my phone records! I can’t believe that I have been a customer for years with them and now they suspect me of doing this to myself.

- How long should it take an insurance company to issue a check for stolen car?
- Don’t call a locksmith.. You can open that door yourself?
- to copy CAR KEY, “Daewoo Lanos”?
- Has anyone else allowed a child to play in the drivers seat of a recently restored car?
- How do I get a new car key, if Ive lost the one and only car key I have?

Well as soon as they discover that they were being jackasses, then you switch companies. Tell them how stupid they are by taking your money elsewhere.
see a lawyer because if they think it is fraud your going to jail
It is common practice to investigate a crime. car thefts are costing us alot of money and wasted police time etc. if you did nothing wrong dont worry it should come out.
I understand your frustration. I dont agree with the insurance company but they do that to see if the owner (in this case you) have driven the car somewhere and then broke the column to make it look like someone stole it. Since you say it was stolen then when the locksmith looks at it will be able to tell because there will be markings on the edges of the key hole so I would just relax and go with the flow for right now. If they come back with something else then I would suggest to have some one else come in and inspect your car and then take the insurance company to court.
Wow,they may have been told by some one that does not like you, that you were filing false claim.Hey,if your claim is legitimate, you got nothing to worry about.Good lick.
It’s standard procedure.
Just tell the truth and don’t take any crap.

Would you like your rates to go up hundreds of dollars a year due to all the fraud that goes on? Do you see the questions on here where people are trying to milk their insurance company for all the money they can?
THAT… is why they investigate thefts. There is tons of fraud in this world. Suck it up… its not you.. its everyone that gets that done too. You cant complain both about insurance prices and then also about companies trying to keep them down.
They’re idiots that’s why. Sweetie, it’s not you. They have to cover their own butts before they cut a check. My mom was in an accident, her car was totaled and she ended up in Intensive Care for 6 weeks. Her car insurance company accused her of arranging the accident. She’s 71 years old! Some guy hit her and they blame her! They’re all _ _ _ holes!!
There are some companies that have “accident forgiveness” and do not raise your rates if you have an accident…I think Allstate is one. You might want to look into their policies.
Apparently, this company has had issues with false stolen car claims, or they don’t want to have issues. Maybe your situation raised some red flags regarding the theft. I’m guessing the car has some value, and the insurance company wants to be sure they aren’t being ripped off. Asking for phone records raises red flags with me, possibly they suspect a known auto thief took the car, and are checking to see if you know or had contact with the individual. They definately don’t believe you, an attorney may be needed to help you with this.
Insurance fraud costs us all billions of dollars. Companies are always on the lookout. Any claim that doesn’t quite fit the norm gets investigated. You may not even be in that position. They grab random files for investigation as well. Do not get a lawyer unless they actually accuse you of fraud. Getting a lawyer in advance will make it look like you have gone on the offensive to hide wrongdoing. When I had an injury claim, I found out I was investigated behind the scenes. I had nothing to hide so the investigator took hidden video once, made his report, and they never bothered me again. As I am a licenced broker, I have seen claims investigated before. Only one was ever denied, and that guy made the mistake of giving me a different story than the one he gave the adjuster, causing him to be thoroughly investigated.
